2025 QAL: Block 9 - Card Trick
This month we’re tackling Block 9 of the 2025 QAL: Card Trick.
It’s one of those blocks that looks impressive at first glance, but when you break it down step by step, it’s totally doable. You’ll get to play with half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles, which makes this a perfect block if you’ve been wanting to practice your precision with bias edges.
The real star here is the hourglass unit at the center. I walk you through how to keep the orientation straight, sew short edge to short edge first (D+E and B+C), then join them so the colors alternate around the block. Once you’ve got that piece, everything else comes together like a puzzle.
Whether you’re making the 3”, 6”, 9”, or 12” size, this block will add so much movement and dimension to your quilt. And the best part? The “card trick” design looks way more complicated than it really is, so you’ll end up with a block that shows off your skills without the stress.
