2025 QAL: Block 3 - Economy Block

Welcome to the third month of our 2025 Quilt-Along! If you’ve been following along, we’ve already covered two beginner-friendly blocks, making it easy for anyone to jump in at any time. This month, we’re working on the Economy Block, a classic design that has stood the test of time in the quilting world.

A Bit of History

The Economy Block, also known as the "Square-in-a-Square" block, has been around for centuries and is a favorite among quilters. It gained popularity during the Great Depression when quilters had to make the most of their fabric scraps—hence the name Economy Block. The simple yet striking design makes it a versatile choice, whether you're aiming for a traditional look or something more modern.

Why You'll Love the Economy Block

One of the reasons the Economy Block is a great choice for quilters of all levels is its straightforward construction. The design is based on squares and triangles, making it a perfect skill-building block for beginners. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to showcase fussy-cut fabrics, bold prints…or - dare I say it - orphaned blocks!!

While there are multiple ways to construct this block, we’re going to use the flying geese method to piece the outer triangles. This method helps keep the seams neat and makes the process even easier. However, if you have a favorite way of making Economy Blocks—go for it! The beauty of quilting is that there’s always more than one way to approach a block.

It's Not Too Late to Join the Fun!

If you’re just hearing about the 2025 Quilt-Along, don’t worry—you can still catch up! The first two blocks we covered were super beginner-friendly, so you won’t feel overwhelmed jumping in now. Plus, each month's tutorial includes a free downloadable pattern and a step-by-step video to guide you through the process.

So, grab your fabric, fire up your sewing machine, and let’s make this Economy Block together! Stay tuned for the tutorial, and don’t forget to share your progress using #2025QAL so we can all see your beautiful work.

Speaking of size, this month’s pattern includes four block sizes3", 6", 9", and 12"—so you can mix and match to fit your vision!

Full Project Requirements

One of the best things about this quilt-along is that you can easily sew along with scraps! But if you prefer a more coordinated look, here’s what I recommend for the full project:
Background fabric – 2 yards
Fat quarters – Around 24 (more than enough for this quilt and then some!)
Border fabric – 1 yard

This should leave you with plenty of fabric to make this quilt more than once or to have fun playing with color combinations!
