Flyway Puzzle Mystery Quilt ✨
Since 2018, I’ve been participating in Cotton Cuts’ Puzzle Mystery Quilt (PMQ) program, and let me tell you—it’s been an incredible adventure every time. The PMQ combines creativity, convenience, and community, making it one of my favorite quilting experiences. This year, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be sewing the Flyway PMQ in the Large size (72" x 72") with the Starling colorway—those gorgeous Hoffman Bali Batiks are calling my name!
But that’s not all. I’ll be adding extra borders to expand the quilt to 88" x 88", creating a truly custom piece.
How the Puzzle Mystery Quilt Works
If you’re new to the PMQ program, here’s the lowdown:
Pre-Cut Fabric Kits: Every month, you’ll receive pre-cut fabric pieces in your chosen colorway—no cutting required!
Monthly Clues: Along with the fabric, you’ll get a step-by-step clue to assemble a portion of the quilt. The final design remains a mystery until the end.
Flexible Options: Choose between Small and Large quilt sizes, and add optional extras like borders, thread, or an "Oops Kit" (perfect for quick fixes).
If you pre-pay for your kit by January 6, 2025, you’ll:
Receive your entire kit upfront when Clue 1 ships.
Gain access to downloadable PDF clues on the day they ship.
Act Fast!
Signups for the Flyway PMQ close when Month 3 ships in May 2025, so don’t wait too long to make up your mind. After that, Flyway will disappear for good, and you won’t want to miss this adventure!
My Tips for PMQ Success
After years of piecing these quilts, I’ve learned a few things along the way. Here are my top tips to help you enjoy the process:
DO NOT starch or steam press your pieces until the entire quilt top is assembled.
Pre-cut pieces can shrink or distort when exposed to starch or steam, so it’s best to wait until your top is complete.Take Inventory of Your Pieces.
When you receive your clue, check that all the pieces are included. If something is missing, let Cotton Cuts know immediately. The fabrics they use are limited, so it’s crucial to address any issues now while replacements are available. Once the PMQ ends, you may not be able to get those pieces.Take Advantage of Detective Zooms.
When you join the PMQ, you’re officially a “Detective.” This comes with perks, like a monthly Zoom hosted by Cotton Cuts where you can sew alongside other Detectives. It’s a fantastic way to connect and share progress.Perfect Points? Try a Scant-Scant 1/4".
If you’re aiming for flawless points, I recommend sewing with a scant-scant 1/4" seam allowance and sizing up each step. That said, I’ve assembled several PMQs without this extra effort, and they’re still beautiful and functional. It’s all about what works for you.Trust the Process.
Not loving a clue? Noticing a missed point or two? Trust me—once the quilt is pieced, quilted, and bound, the overall design and visual interest will overshadow any little imperfections. Quilts are meant to be loved, not scrutinized!
