Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats

If you’re anything like me, you hate wasting good food—especially after a big meal prep session. A while back, I found myself with leftover sweet potato from dinner and two adorable, expectant faces (Beetlejuice and Akumu, my furry taste-testers) staring up at me. That’s when inspiration struck: Why not make homemade dog treats?

After a little experimenting, I whipped up a batch of sweet potato dog treats that were not only easy to make but also tail-waggingly delicious (according to the pups). Bonus: they’re healthy, too! Sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamins and fiber, making them a great base for a homemade snack.

Now, anytime I have leftover sweet potato, I know exactly what to do. Beetlejuice and Akumu practically do a happy dance every time they smell these baking. And the best part? These treats are made with simple, wholesome ingredients you probably already have on hand!

Here’s how you can treat your pups, too:

Sweet Potato Dog Treats Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked and cooled—leftovers work great!)

  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the mashed sweet potato, peanut butter, and egg until smooth.

  3. Gradually add in the all-purpose flour, mixing until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra flour until it’s easy to handle.

  4. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface. Use a cookie cutter (a bone shape is adorable, but any shape works!) to cut out treats.

  5. Place the treats on the baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until they’re firm and lightly golden.

  6. Let the treats cool completely before serving them to your pups. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week—or freeze them for longer storage.

Why These Treats Are Paw-some:

  • Healthy Ingredients: Sweet potatoes are full of vitamins A, B6, and C, while peanut butter adds protein and healthy fats.

  • Customizable: All-purpose flour works great, and it's a pantry staple most of us have on hand.

  • Easy to Make: Even if you’re not a baker, these treats are practically foolproof.

Beetlejuice and Akumu give this recipe four paws up, and I’m pretty sure your pups will, too. So, next time you find yourself with leftover sweet potato, don’t let it go to waste—turn it into a special snack for your furry friends!
